Choosing the Correct Prescription Lens Tint

Getting your sports prescription sunglasses lens choice correct first time round

All sports typically need the same lens tint characteristics, increased contrast, increased depth perception and if possible whist meeting these things to be cosmetically attractive. There are a few exceptions such as sailers who will require polarised lenses whilst many cyclists will ask not have polarised (not polarised for cycling? we will explain this later!)

First question to ask your self is,

Do you want one lens that will do everything well

or

Do you want two or more lenses that will do their own conditions extremely well

One prescription sunglass lens that will do every condition well

(note: these lenses are good for daytime and nighttime and meet legal regulations for nighttime wear)

  • Extreme Transitions Grey

These lenses are genuine transitions (you’ll have most likely seen the adverts on TV) and react from clear to dark grey. Supplied with a hard coat as standard.

Recommended for sports which are primarily played out in open spaces, where the majority of the time the wearer will be in direct sunlight or if a neutral colour is required as grey will not affect the natural hue of your vision.

Recommended sports: Road cycling, general sunglasses wear

Extra’s: Can be purchased with Anti-reflection (incorporates the hard coat and glare reduction technology), recommended for faster reaction to dark and if using at nighttime often as reduces glare around car headlights and street lamps)

  • Extreme NXT Yellow to Grey Photochromic

These lenses are part of a new collection made from a new material called Trivex (NXT is the sun lens trademark for Trivex lenses). You may also have seen the NXT logo on top brands such as Rudy Project. NXT offers all the durability of polycarbonate but deliveries better optical clarity as a raw material. Delivering better vision in the end product.

NXT yellow to grey has a light yellow constant tint, reacting with sunlight to a dark grey. The yellow base tint is constant, which means even when the lens has reacted dark grey the yellow is still present lifting your contrast and improving depth perception. An amazing lens if you prefer the cool hue of grey but equally wish to lift your contrast in all light conditions. The yellow base tint is with in legal regulations for nighttime use.

Recommended sports: Road cycling, mountain biking, golf, tennis, general wear

(All of the above lenses would work really well plus)

  • Extreme NXT Orange to Brown Photochromic

These lenses are part of a new collection made from a new material called Trivex (NXT is the sun lens trademark for Trivex lenses). You may also have seen the NXT logo on top brands such as Rudy Project. NXT offers all the durability of polycarbonate but deliveries better optical clarity as a raw material. Delivering better vision in the end product.

NXT orange to brown has a light orange constant tint, reacting with sunlight to a dark brown. The orange base tint is constant, which means even when the lens has reacted dark brown the orange is still present lifting your contrast and improving depth perception. An amazing lens if your main concern is to maximise contrast on overcast days or to boost contrast even on bright sunny days. Note: the orange base tint is slightly too dark to meet nighttime legal regulations. Although we do have many wearers who find the lens great for dusk light (legally we just have to advise you can’t drive in them at night, hence it being in this category)

Recommended sports: Road cycling, mountain biking, golf, tennis, general wear

  • Extreme NXT Polarised Photochromic Grey

These lenses are part of a new collection made from a new material called Trivex (NXT is the sun lens trademark for Trivex lenses). You may also have seen the NXT logo on top brands such as Rudy Project. NXT offers all the durability of polycarbonate but deliveries better optical clarity as a raw material. Delivering better vision in the end product.

NXT Polarised Grey to Dark Grey has a light grey constant tint, reacting with sunlight to a dark grey.  Amazingly the base grey tint is really light and allows for winter and summer wear, whilst the lenses are 100% polarised regardless of how reacted the tint is. These are amazing lenses for any sport or activity that requires all weather wear near or on water / snow. Note: the grey base tint is slightly too dark to meet nighttime legal regulations. Although we do have many wearers who find the lens great for dusk light (legally we just have to advise you can’t drive in them at night, hence it being in this category)

Recommended sports: Sailing, fishing and general wear

  • Extreme Drivewear Polarised Photochromic

These lenses have an amber tint, which is constant. A photochromic layer reacts to sunlight turning the lens brown. This lens is ideal for driving but also general wear and sports as the amber tint lifts your contrast in low light and even when the lens has reacted dark brown. Plus added to this the lenses are polarised which eliminates 99.9 glare.

Recommended sports: Driving, sailing, fishing and general wear

  • Extreme Polarised Green

Great lenses if you want good contrast in low light / winter / overcast conditions whilst still having a polarised lens which will eliminate glare in bright light / summer. This lens has a look and feel of a grey base lens whilst the green hue lifts your contrast better in lower light conditions. Although it is good at lifting contrast we would recommend Brown Polarised for sports as its ability to lift contrast in winter is better.

Recommended sports: General wear

Fancy a mirror coating?

Mirror coatings are a great way to get a contrast lifting tint whilst maintaining the cosmetic appearance of the sunglasses.

Best solutions include,

  • Brown polarised lenses with a silver flash mirror

These have the benefit of a brown tint to lift your contrast whilst the silver flash mirror makes the lenses slightly darker in bright sunlight (as it reflects a further 8% of the light) and from the perspective of viewers your lenses just appear to be silver mirrored. Ie they can’t see the brown tint. This works really well if you have your heart set on a frame colour that won’t particularly suit a brown tint.

On the site we tent to list the standard set ups,

Brown tint with sliver mirror

Brown tint with Gold mirror

Grey tint with silver mirror

Grey tint with Blue mirror

But we can actually make up any combination, any tint with any colour mirror. If you have something in mind just give us an email or call. We have often put brown / rose tints with orange and red mirrors which works really well.

(Mirror colours available: Orange, Red, Green, Blue, Gold, Silver)

*Flash mirror coatings – these are what we use in general and offer a subtle mirror

*Power mirror coatings – these are available and the end result is a full effect mirror

Prescription Lenses that excel for Low light

(Note: although the lenses will always supply 100% UV protection in medium to bright light the lenses will not perform. So you will get no eye damage but will be squinting)

Recommended Sports: Skiing in overcast conditions, cycling in overcast conditions
